Power from the tides - unlocking the Severn Estuary’s potential for clean energy.

Curious about tidal energy? Join us for an evening with the experts.

Meet the Speakers

Andrew Garrad  has been professionally involved in renewable energy for 45 years.  He built his first windmill in 1971. In 1984 he co-founded the Garrad Hassan Group which grew to become the world’s largest renewable energy consultancy. From 2013 to 2015 he was President of the European Wind Energy Association.

In 2024 he was awarded the global Queen Elizabeth Prize for Engineering together with Henrik Stiesdal of Denmark  and was appointed Chair of the Independent Commission on the Severn Estuary which reported in March 2025. He is a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering and an Honorary Fellow of New College, Oxford. He is a Visiting Professor of Engineering Mathematics at Bristol University.
Peter Kydd has over 45 years experience working for infrastructure consulting firms, and following retirement, he continues to be retained by WSP as a consultant, advising on decarbonisation, clean growth, climate change action planning and tidal power.

His most recent experience has been acting as technical advisor to the Severn Estuary Commission for their work on tidal power in the Severn Estuary and he has also worked extensively for The Crown Estate, WECA and UK and Welsh Governments on tidal power since the early 2000’s.   He is currently advising WECA and Cardiff Capital Region on the next steps for the implementation of the Severn Estuary Commission’s recommendations.

He has presented at many conferences on all aspects of tidal power and published both technical and general papers on tidal power and decarbonisation.

In 2024, he was awarded the ICE’s Gold Medal for Engineering Excellence and Ethics.

Wilf DiBiase is a research engineer at Proteus Marine Renewables in Bristol, a world-leading developer of tidal stream technology. He currently focusses on understanding the forces and stresses that tidal turbines experience in the water.

Wilf studied chemical engineering at the University of Birmingham and worked as a materials engineer at Airbus, before joining IDCORE (Industrial Doctoral Training Centre in Offshore Renewable Energy) in 2024. Swansea University is one of the partner universities on the IDCORE programme.
